WhatsApp had last year announced that it would end support for iOS 6. Further in January this year it also confirmed its plans to shut support for iOS 7. If you are an iPhone user still rolling on an older iOS version and didn’t take note of these announcements before, it is time you take it now.

WhatsApp developers have updated the app for iOS taking up the WhatsApp version to 2.18.90. The new update brings some new features to the iPhones and alongside also ends support for iPhone 4 and all other devices running on iOS 7.

The iPhone 4 has been dropped from the list of phones to receive the iOS 8 support. WhatsApp support for some phones like the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 4S will also stop if they are not updated to the latest iOS on or before February 1, 2020. WhatsApp says that the devices running on iOS 7 can still continue to use the app until February 1, 2020. However, the company has stopped actively developing for iOS 7 so some features might stop working at any time.

While the iPhone 4 users will have to finally say goodbye to WhatsApp, users on iPhone 4S or newer models running iOS 7 can update their iOS to the latest OS version if they want to continue using the app on their phones.

WhatsApp says it wants to focus on the latest OS versions and develop features compatible with it instead of working for the older OS versions. This is the reason why the chat company has stopped developing for a range of operating systems including Android versions older than 2.3.3, Windows Phone 8.0 and older, iPhone 3GS/iOS 6 and Nokia Symbian S60.

WhatsApp with the latest update brings a range of features for iOS users that already exist for Android users. Now iOS users can also recognize dubious links via Suspicious links features. WhatsApp recently launched this features as part of its effort to fight against the spread of fake news. With the Suspicious link feature, WhatsApp locally analyses the data received in a message to detect if it’s suspicious. WhatsApp marks a link Suspicious if it contains unusual character.

WhatsApp is also rolling out Notification extension support for all iOS users on iOS and above. The feature allows user to see as well as download images and GIFs preview right in their notifications. The roll out is slow so it might take couple of weeks to reach all the eligible users.
